Author: Asana 04.09.2007

Everyone knows that Yoga is said to be a quite relaxing type of exercise. It is not only popular in the Hindu culture but has also been a proven way to stay fit and healthy, mind and body. Yoga is much more than a form of meditation but is actually a common exercise regime that has been used around the world for a long time.

Like most other forms of exercise there are some forms of Yoga which require additional equipment to be used while practicing. The most commonly used piece of exercise equipment in Yoga practice is a mat.

Your yoga mat can either be a large thick towel or rug, or a special yoga mat that is designed by different companies and sold in sports shops. The majority of yoga mats that are used are made from cotton or polyester latex. There are more expensive mats and less expensive ones, so you have to search around for the quality and type you want to invest in.

The type of Yoga that you are practicing will also help determine which type of mat would be best suited for you. If you are involved in a type of yoga which requires you to jump from one form to another such as Ashtanga yoga then you will need a mat which is really thick and can absorb the impact.

When you are practicing yoga exercises you will likely sweat alot of you are doing it correctly. This means that you need to invest in a yoga matt which has the capability of absorbing sweat, such as a cotton mat.

Another popular piece of yoga exercise equipment is a yoga ball. You use these balls as if you were performing a traditional crunch on the ground. For some exercises this yoga ball will provide more support, and in others the incline will increase the level of difficulty.

Raja Yoga

Author: Asana 04.09.2007

Indian scriptures state that every soul is divine and the ultimate purpose of human life is to experience the state of divinity. They all advocate four separate paths which are not mutually exclusive for attaining this goal. The path of devotion (Bhakthi Yoga) and the path of selfless service (karma yoga), the path of intellectual inquiry (Jnana yoga) as well as the path of meditation (Raja Yoga) are the four different paths.

With Raja yoga you are able to reach your goals father than you ever imagined. This type of yoga involves stilling the mind and senses so that you are able to cease identity with ourselves, with the body mind complex as well as experience our true nature. Everyone communicates to the outside world through the basic five senses. Your mind interprets the impulses from these senses.

In India the ancient yogis discovered the relation between the mind and breathing. If someone is agitated than their breathing becomes faster and heavier, and when they are calm their breathing is calm.

It was the yogis who discovered that we are able to control our mind by controlling the way we breathe. Everyone is able to do this by simply breathing in deeply and slowly for a few moments. This allows the mind to become calmer and the heart rate much slower.

It still isn’t enough to completely still the mind to experience out real nature. To be able to totally achieve this you must use different effective methods. Kriya yoga is actually a form of Raja yoga that is said to prevent the electrical impulses from leaving the brain and spinal cord so that the external world ceases to exists because the person who is meditating is concerned enabling them to experience a state of conscious sleep. This is much different from natural sleep which is involuntary.

Vinyasa Yoga

Author: Asana 04.09.2007

The common person’s life is a crazy journey. No one can avoid the unexpected things that confront you last minute. Through the power of yoga you are able to gain experience at bending out own bodies, wills, and minds to any task at hand. Likely one of the most useful gifts that you get from practicing yoga is true flexibility.

True flexibility means that you are able to adapt to the change of every moment, while still maintaining a spirit of calm, devotion, and love. Once we are given the time and attention we are able to create our own sources for comfort. Through the practice of yoga you are able to draw flexibility and strength no matter what the current circumstances are. We are able to tap into a powerful source of our own energy that is made up of physical resiliency, emotional maturity, as well as spiritual optimism.

There was a great yoga master named Krishnamacharya who emphasized Vinyasa as an artful approach to living and central to the transformative process of yoga. The true meaning of Vinyasa is linking a movement to the breath, which refers to the progressive sequences that are led by the flow of one’s breath pattern.

Vinyasa sequences are thought of as the sacred dance of the yogis and are referring to the natural deep rhythm of the breath acting as the sacred beat. For Krishnamacharya, and his famous students B.K.S. Iyengar, Bikram Choudry, and P. Jois, Vinyasa yoga is focused on progressive sequences that unfold with an inherent harmony and intelligence.

The flow of the breath, and life itself, as well as the vinyasa practice is well described by a sailing metaphor. These three will all require you to synchronize natural forces and requires skill and intuition. We must take into consideration the boat, tides, and waves which will constantly change as do our physical, emotional, and spiritual states.

Author: Asana 21.08.2007

Sometimes a pregnancy can go smooth without any trouble but other times it is not so successful. Although a woman knows she must endure what ever pain comes with child birth she may not be aware of the one natural way to minimize the pain. Yoga is often overlooked when it comes to pregnancy but it is probably the most effective. Because yoga is safe, a woman can begin yoga at any point of her pregnancy, even the last trimester.

Yoga is a form of exercise that gently stretches the muscles without pulling them beyond their limits. Yoga can also prepare a woman for birth because it relieves the pressure and tension that is associated with the weight of the baby. Carrying a baby puts the body in stress as the ligaments stretch and pull with growth. During labor, when you become tense, uptight and excited all at the same time your body tightens up. This makes pain more intense because your body has reached its maximum.

Yoga teaches a woman to relieve stress and tension with simple breathing techniques. When you feel stress and pain you may hold your breath. Yoga teaches you different breathing techniques in order to relax your body. These techniques can be the difference between intense labor pain and mild controllable pain. Although it will be a challenge to keep reminding yourself of these techniques when labor pains become more frequent and more intense it will be worth it as you practice your breathing.

Yoga can be started in any phase of pregnancy and it can improve your chances of having a successful labor and delivery. It can also reduce stress as well as increase circulation. After delivery you can resume yoga after your doctor says that it is okay. Yoga will help you reduce the stress that comes with being a new parent.

Ashtanga Yoga

Author: Asana 21.08.2007

Ashtanga Yoga means “eight limbed yoga” which is designed to cleanse the body and the mind. There are eight spiritual practices of Ashtanga Yoga and they are Yama, niyama, asana, prananyama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and Samadhi. All of these mean something spiritual. Yama means moral codes, niyama means self purification, pranayama means to have breath control, pratyahara means sense of control, dharana means concentration, dhyana means meditation and Samadhi means contemplation. The belief of Ashtanga Yoga is that the body traps unpure things. The mind needs to be first before the body can regain control again. Then the eight principles are practiced through what is called vinyasa and tristhana. Vinyasa means breath and movement together. As you breath and move it motivates the body to increase circulation and remove the impurities by perspiring.

Tristhana refers to three different ways of focus. These are posture, breathing and surroundings. These are needed to cleanse the body and the mind. Posture improves eventually with asanas. Breathing is meant to be strengthened through a balance of inhaling and exhaling. There are nine places that the yogi focuses on while performing yoga. These would be the nose, navel, thumb, hands, feet, between the eyebrows, up, right side and the left side. Breathing is very important during Ashtanga Yoga and you will be taught a special way to breath so you will get the full effect of Ashtanga Yoga.

Ashtanga yoga is a wonderful way to keep your body motivated as it gets stimulated through the breathing and physical techniques used. If you want to try Ashtanga Yoga you can visit a class where it is being taught so that you can see first hand how Ashtanga Yoga is done. If you choose to start Ashtanga Yoga keep in mind that it takes patients and dedication in order to get the most of this unique form of exercise and meditation.

Yoga Apparel

Author: Asana 21.08.2007

If you are taking a yoga class you will need to be comfortable but at the same time you need to make sure that you are wearing the right clothing for this exercise. Of course with anything you wear you need to feel comfortable in it. If you don’t feel comfortable in something you may spend your entire workout time worrying about what you look like or how bad you may feel. This is a huge distraction and can cause you to not perform your yoga correctly and may even cause injuries. In order to perform your yoga correctly consider the following.

If you choose to wear baggy clothing you may become chaffed or you may find that it is too hard to perform your exercise appropriately. The same goes for clothing that is too tight on you. This may cause some restriction or decrease circulation. Have form fitting clothing that you can move around in without any limitations. You should also look at the fabric in which your clothing is made from. You want to have comfortable clothing and if you prefer a certain type of clothing than that is what you should have. Pay attention to see what the instructor is wearing and other students in the class. Notice how comfortable they feel and how well they are able to move around with ease.

If you are taking yoga at a special school inquire about the line of clothing that they would recommend. Some schools offer their own line of clothing as well. If not they can direct you to a website or a catalog that you can find what you need. You can also do your own website search to find yoga workout clothing that is available and with a better selection. Besides the clothing, you can find mats and towels that you can use during your class to make it easier to perform yoga.

Hatha Yoga

Author: Asana 21.08.2007

Hatha Yoga

If you are considering Hatha Yoga you should know a little about it first. Like regular yoga it stretches the muscles and relieves the stress of everyday life. It helps to prepare your mind for deeper concentration. Others use it for spiritual cleansing. Relaxing and clearing the mind will help make the most of your yoga.

This method of yoga was originally introduced by a man named Yogi Swatmarama. He was from 15th century India. He first introduced yoga as a prepared step into purification of the body. They believed in physically training the body with meditation. This was called Shatkarma. Hatha is a compound word of Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon. It is meant to channel energy in your body. Hatha believes the same thing as Raja Yoga which means that you can completely control your mind, body and spirit. Because of the similarity it is often referred to as yoga today.

This type of yoga can relieve the aches and pains of the back and neck. It can help you learn your body and understand how best to relax it. If you can channel the energy that is being suppressed in your body you will be able to release it allowing you to become more happy and healthy. You can become in touch with your feelings and your inner spirit. In order to obtain successful meditation you need to be able to clear your mind. At first this may be difficult to do if you are not use to it but if you continue to meditate it will soon become easier to clear your mind.

Hatha yoga is a great way to learn the proper way to breath in order to channel the energy. If you cannot locate a Hatha yoga class you may need to do some research in order to find out where you can go.

Bikram Yoga

Author: Asana 21.08.2007

If you have been considering Bikram Yoga there are a few things you should know about it first. Unlike aerobic exercises that get your heartrate going Bikram yoga does not require such specifics. The main purpose of this type of yoga is to restrict the blood flow in the vessels and veins and then suddenly releasing the pressure causing the blood to flow through the veins rapidly at first. This type of yoga can cleanse your veins and vessels. There are many ways to prepare for this type of yoga and not everyone can do it. If Bikram yoga is right for you, you will need to be prepared for your class.

How to do Bikram Yoga

To perform Bikram yoga you will put your body into a tourniquet using stretching techniques. The pressure in your body will stop the blood flow. After this is successful you will release causing the blood to flow fast.

Before you start Bikram Yoga

Because this yoga can be intense you will need to prepare for your class. After locating a facility that offers Bikram Yoga you need to prepare your body by drinking two liters of water per day. Start drinking water one week before you start, especially if you are not use to drinking that much water every day. If you drink soda, coffee, tea, or other drinks that contain cafffeine you need to stop for several reasons. The first reason is because water is better for your body. Your body needs a certain amount of water to keep you healthy. Second, the caffeine in drinks is addictive and third, you will take your Bikram yoga in a classroom that is heated to 105 degrees. Because you you will be in such a hot temperature and because you will be performing yoga you will need to dress appropriately. Do not eat anything 1-3 hours before your class. Your system needs to be empty in order for Bikram yoga to work properly. Dress comfortably in clothing such as a bathing suit or tank top and exercise shorts. You don’t want to wear baggy clothing as they will just make it more difficult on you.

After Bikram Yoga

You should feel fine after your session or you may feel symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or short of breath it is probably due to not breathing properly while exercising or another small adjustment you will need to make.

Muscle soreness is normal after your first class of Bikram yoga. Do not stop because of the soreness but continue as much as possible until you can return to your class. Bikram yoga needs to be practiced every day for at least two months straight. There are CD’s and DVD’s that you can purchase to work out at home.

When a woman goes through labor, her adrenaline is running full force while her body is preparing for the birth of her child. Women can become tense during this time which causes the pain to become more intense. Knowing how to deal with the pain during labor and delivery is easy to do if you are prepared. The only way to be prepared is through pregnancy yoga.

If you have thought about yoga but have never tried it you should know that it is never too late to start yoga, even if you are on your last three months of pregnancy. Because yoga does not contain fast paced exercise or heavy equipment it can not hurt you or your baby if you do the yoga as instructed by a professional. Yoga offers physical stretching without hurting your body. It also helps you emotionally become stronger as you get ready for your baby.

Yoga teaches you how to stretch gently and it also teaches you special breathing techniques that you will use while you are in labor. Breathing is very important and sometimes women hold their breaths when they experience pain. It’s a natural reaction but they need to catch themselves and focus on breathing. That is where yoga comes in. The gentle stretching will help your body as it stretches during labor allowing your baby to be born with minimal pain.

Always ask your doctor before trying any new exercise to make sure that you are safe and you will not cause any complications with your pregnancy. Yoga is safe and effective and you can continue yoga after giving birth. You need to wait 6 weeks after have a cesarean section or 4-6 weeks after a vaginal birth or after you stop bleeding.
